Peeling, exfoliation, scrub. There is a large selection of fruit acid products both from Exuviance, Murad, Caudalie, Babor and many, many more.

Most people have heard of fruit acid before, but how much do you really know about this exfoliant?

Fruit acid is a chemical peeling that is used extensively in our professional as well as private skin care today.

There are 3 forms of fruit acid. AHA (alpha hydroxy acids), BHA (beta hydroxy acids) and PHA (poly hydroxy acids).

AH

AHA is the name of a number of chemical compounds which can be natural or synthetic (the same applies to BHA and PHA).

It is often used in skin care and is used as an antiaging treatment, acne treatment and much more. Both AHA, BHA and PHA have a visible effect with continuous use.

Types of AHA

Glycolic acid – Derived from sugar and has a positive effect on sebum production.

Malic acid – Extracted from apple, is moisturizing, softening and stimulating.

Tartaric acid – Extracted from grapes and is a powerful antioxidant.

Mandelic acid – Extracted from almonds and has a positive effect on pigment

Citric acid – Extracted from citrus fruits and has an anti-aging, brightening and strengthening effect on the epidermis

Lactic acid – Derived from milk and sugar and has a moisturizing effect, inhibits pigment and balances the skin's pH value.

BHA

The most commonly used BHA is salicylic acid, which is derived from willow bark, wintergreen oil or sweet birch. Because salicylic acid is lipophilic (attracted to oil) and keratolytic, it is able to penetrate the skin and remove accumulations of excess sebum, waste products and skin cells, making it particularly effective in treating acne and other conditions with blemishes and congestion.

Types of BHA

Salicylic acid – Exfoliating and cleansing.

PHA

PHA works in the same way as AHA, but the particles are larger and this means that they are gentler on the skin surface, so if the skin is very sensitive, PHA is recommended. They have an antioxidant effect and strengthen the skin's surface.

Types of PHA

Lactobionic acid – Derived from lactose and is a soothing and strong antioxidant that inhibits moisture loss.

Galactose – Derived from sugar. Used in e.g. the production of collagen and the formation of our skin cells. May improve wound healing.

Gluconic acid – Occurs naturally in our cells and is an antioxidant as well as having an anti-inflammatory property.
